Guangzhou Worlda's Festial: teacher's Day

Monday September 9th in China was Teacher’s Day. While this holiday may not be popular in many western countries, it is very important and known here. On this day, as you might guess, students show their appreciation for their teachers. Being a teacher in China is a highly respected job. Teachers are considered as second parents to the students, while often getting higher salaries then doctors or lawyers. The bond between students and teachers is much stronger then in western countries as teachers will teach the same students the same subject for usually 3 years.

Oddly though, this holiday comes at an awkward time for our new teachers as it is often their first or second week at the school. So we had a welcoming/teachers day party for our teachers to show our own appreciation!  We started the party with a little bit of snacking and chatting, having some of the new teachers meet some of the old. We shared some stories about our experienced in China and what we hoped to accomplish the next year.
After story and chatting time was over, the real competition began - Teacher Olympics! For this we had 4 different games the teachers could compete in. This had a dual purpose as well, to help teachers with games they can play during classes.  At the end we had an intense game of China Jeopardy.

At the end of the competitions, we tallied the score and distributed prizes. We also had another reason to celebrate this day, as it was very near to Mid-Autumn festival. This holiday is to bring people together, like a full circle. This also is also to celebrate the biggest full moon of the year. At the end of the party, all teachers got a take away bag where we tried to combine western and eastern culture. Western teachers love getting apples, and Chinese teachers love getting moon cakes (a tiny circular cake filled with lotus seed paste and a duck egg.) Our lucky teachers got both! Thanks to everyone who came to the party, hope we can make it even bigger and better next year!
